The setup is almost cruelly simple: two immigrants, one Thanksgiving, 1973. No car chases, no plot twists you can see from the parking lot — just two people in a kitchen figuring out whether this country is going to be home. The Heart Sellers, Virginia Stage Company's fall production at Wells Theatre, runs through October 18, and it's the warmest thing on a local stage right now.
The play follows Jane and Luna — new arrivals with different pasts and the same uncertain future — over the course of a single holiday. It's funny in the way real kitchens are funny, and it lands its punches without ever raising its voice.
Why go
Wells Theatre is a 1913 Beaux-Arts beauty downtown, and Virginia Stage has a habit of programming with actual nerve. This is the rare night out that sends you home thinking instead of scrolling — bring someone you like talking to after.
The Heart Sellers · Through Oct 18 · Wells Theatre, Norfolk. Tickets via Virginia Stage Company.
