The Best Waterfront Spots (That Locals Actually Go To)

Every coastal city has two waterfronts: the one on the postcards and the one where locals actually eat. This is the second list — ranked, named, and argued over. No tourist traps survived our vetting. If the menu has more laminated pages than the food has flavor, it's not here.

The Rules

10

Rudee's Restaurant & Cabana Bar

VIRGINIA BEACH · RUDEE INLET

Glider seats, inlet views, and she-crab soup with a genuine local reputation. Yes, it's near the oceanfront. No, it's not a tourist trap — the regulars would riot if the kitchen slipped, and the kitchen knows it.

ORDER THIS: The she-crab soup, then the blackened flounder.

"The oceanfront exception that proves the rule."

9

Amber Lantern

CHESAPEAKE · ELIZABETH RIVER

Perched above a quiet marina, all sunset windows and crab-stuffed flounder. This is the date-night waterfront — the one you book when the evening needs to go well. Arrive by boat and you'll feel like you cheated at life.

ORDER THIS: Crab-stuffed flounder, something cold in a tall glass.

"Impress someone without trying too hard."

8

Saltine

NORFOLK · DOWNTOWN WATERFRONT

The chic one. Downtown Norfolk's waterfront finally got a seafood room with actual ambition — polished without being precious. Proof the 757 can do upscale coastal without importing the attitude.

ORDER THIS: Whatever's raw. The raw program is the point.

"Downtown grew up. It looks good on it."

7

Decoys Seafood

SUFFOLK · BENNETT'S CREEK

Marina views, seasonal live music, and the kind of drive that filters out everyone who doesn't mean it. Suffolk's waterfront is criminally underrated and Decoys is the evidence. Go on a music night.

ORDER THIS: The seafood platter, eaten slowly while the band plays.

"Worth crossing a bridge for. Worth crossing two."

6

Captain Groovy's Grill & Raw Bar

NORFOLK · WILLOUGHBY BAY

Colorful, quirky, and directly in the flight path of military ships — dinner with a side of naval theater. The fish tacos are famous for a reason and the deck is pure Norfolk: working waterfront, zero costume.

ORDER THIS: Fish tacos and a local craft beer. Watch for ships.

"Only in the 757: aircraft carriers as dinner theater."

5

The Porch on Long Creek

VIRGINIA BEACH · GREAT NECK

A wrap-around deck on Long Creek where boats glide toward the Bay and the cocktails are taken seriously. Lively without being loud — the rare waterfront that works for both a birthday and a Tuesday.

ORDER THIS: A seafood platter and whatever the bartender recommends.

"The deck all other decks are judged against."

4

Blue Pete's

VIRGINIA BEACH · PUNGO

Down the country roads of Pungo, past the farms, is a rustic dockside joint that locals treat like a secret they only half-keep. The drive is the filter; the seafood is the reward. If you complain about the drive, you don't deserve it.

ORDER THIS: The catch of the day, fried the way your grandmother would approve of.

"The pilgrimage is part of the meal."

3

Bubba's

VIRGINIA BEACH · LYNNHAVEN INLET

The local staple. Lynnhaven Inlet sunsets, a menu that doesn't overthink it, and a crowd that's been coming for years. This is the answer when someone asks "where do locals actually go" — and the reason the question exists.

ORDER THIS: Crab legs at sunset. Time it right.

"The sunset does half the work. The kitchen does the rest."

2

Chick's Oyster Bar

VIRGINIA BEACH · LYNNHAVEN

The anchor. Ask ten locals for their waterfront pick and this is the name that comes up most — casual seafood on the water, done right for long enough that it's basically infrastructure. Number one with a bullet, and it's not close.

ORDER THIS: Oysters, obviously. Then the fish of the day.

"The undisputed heavyweight — until the people spoke."

1

Dockside Seafood & Fishing Center

VIRGINIA BEACH · SHORE DRIVE

A working fishing center that happens to serve food — boats unload next to your table and nobody's pretending otherwise. Zero pretense, maximum freshness. This is the 757's waterfront id: unpolished, unbothered, unbeatable at lunch.

ORDER THIS: Whatever came off the boat today. Ask. They'll tell you.

"The people's champion. You called it."

Honorable Mentions

Surf Rider & The Deadrise — Hampton

Hampton's waterfront deserves its own list. Surf Rider (1 Marina Rd) and The Deadrise (100 McNair Dr) hold down the Peninsula — next edition's problem.

Crab Shack on the James — Newport News

Riverfront pier dining on the James. The Peninsula's rowdiest good time with a view.

Waterman's Surfside Grille — Virginia Beach Oceanfront

Yes, it's on the oceanfront. Yes, the orange crushes are that good. Rules are made to be bent.

"A waterfront restaurant with a bad view is just a restaurant with higher rent."
