Friday Night Lights: Six of the State's Top Ten Are From the 757

High school football stadium under Friday night lights with packed bleachers
Four districts, one obsession. Friday night in the 757.

Let's start with the number that matters: six of the ten best teams in Virginia's Class 5 play in the 757. Maury sits at No. 1, King's Fork at No. 2, Indian River at No. 3, Bethel at No. 6, Green Run at No. 8, and Cox at No. 10. And in the statewide top 25, the 757 holds six of the top fifteen. If you live anywhere else in Virginia, this is the part where you sigh.

Oh, and Maury is chasing a fourth consecutive state title — which would make the Commodores the first South Hampton Roads team ever to do it. The poll had them No. 1 at 2-2 after a brutal out-of-state schedule. At 4-2, they're not giving it back.

Last week: history in Hampton

The result of the weekend didn't come Friday — it came Saturday, when Bethel beat Phoebus for the first time in 30 years. Three decades. Bethel led 21-0 at halftime and ended a drought that predates most of the players' parents' high school graduations. Freshman quarterback Tyson Carter led a young core that just announced itself.

Friday's slate was a parade of running clocks: Maury 64, Norview 0. Indian River 41, Nansemond River 13 — the Braves are 6-0. King's Fork 40, Western Branch 7 — the Bulldogs are 5-0. Oscar Smith 54, Deep Creek 7, a bounce-back after two straight losses. Green Run 21, Kellam 14. Salem 35, First Colonial 0. Bayside 33, Tallwood 12. And Booker T. Washington 55, Granby 0 — the Bookers are 4-2 and lurking in the Eastern District.

The state of the districts

Eastern: Maury's league to lose, with Booker T. Washington and Norview chasing. Southeastern: the deepest top-to-bottom district in the region — Indian River, King's Fork, and Oscar Smith all capable of beating each other on the right night. Beach: Green Run and Cox carrying the banner. Peninsula: Bethel's the story now, Phoebus is wounded, and Hampton's got the most exciting quarterback in the district.

Why we're doing this
